We made our maiden voyage to the Poplar Creek Natural Area to survey the property & look for mushrooms. After weeks of rain, there was some hope to find Morels or Oysters, however only a small cluster of Oysters was found. The property was surveyed & was very clean, aside from the Forest Tent Caterpillar takeover.
We had a great group show up for the foray & we had a wonderful time looking for mushrooms & still found many interesting specimens. The only edibles found were some small Artomyces pixadus. Lots of other things made it back to our “table” though – we found & learned about: lots of Peziza, a few varieties of Fomitopsis, as well as loads of Gymnopus, Homophron, Fomes excavatus, a Ganoderma applanatum, some Lichenomphalia, Agrocybe, a few Pluteus, a couple different Xeromphalina, some Hygrophoraceae, Kuehneromyces, a couple Cortinatius, Cyrptoporus volvatus, a lovely Conobolbitina viscosa, and some cool sticks, some with Trichaptum & one with some Chlorociboria & some small white cup fungi that were hiding under some moss.
Good times & snacks were had while we discussed our finds. Big thanks to everyone who made it out, we had many old friends as well as some first timers. We hope to see you all again soon!
