It’s been an odd year. Everything seems to be starting late, or perhaps not happening at all. After scouting southeast of Edmonton for nearly six weeks, I was convinced our recent deluge would trigger a bountiful morel and verpa season. Sadly, that wasn’t the case. Our group spent close to four hours checking three different locations and didn’t find a single morel or verpa. We did, however, have two nice oyster mushroom finds. One was a very waterlogged specimen best left for the bugs, but the other was a beautiful, perfect clump – one of the nicest I’ve seen in a long time! Big congratulations to Kaelan for that find. No one begrudged him the prize, especially after he drove all the way from Calgary for the foray.
