DESCRIPTION:Presenter:  Martin Osis\nDate: Thursday\, May 5\, 2022\nTime: 19:00 – 20:30 hr. \nLocation: ZOOM link will be sent to all paid AMS members a few days before the event. \nMartin Osis Bio  April\, 2022 \nMartin Osis is an amateur mycologist who is one of the founding members of the Alberta Mycological Society in 1987 when it was then known as the Edmonton Mushroom Club. Since that time\, he has been a major contributor to the Society\, holding various positions throughout the years\, including President\, Vice President\, Program Director\, Foray Coordinator\, Database committee chair\, etc.  He has been a member of the Pacific Northwest Key Council and the Canadian trustee and Vice President of the North American Mycological Association. Because of his strong interest in medicinal mushrooms and the centuries’ long use of mushrooms in treatment of various conditions\, Martin studied Traditional Chinese Medicine at Grant MacEwan University. He also spearheaded the formation of NAMA’s Medicinal Mushroom Committee. \nMartin is generally regarded as one of Alberta’s experts in mushroom field identification.  He is responsible for several initiatives including AMS Annual Photo Contest (for members and non-members)\, utilizing the photos received for other projects\, such as AMS’ Alberta Mushroom Poster series including collaboration with Robert Rogers and Alberta Poison Control Centre to produce the “Poisonous Mushrooms of Alberta” poster for emergency and health clinic education and use\, and spearheaded a major photo display for the Royal Alberta Museum. He initiated the Great Alberta Mushroom Foray – AMS’ major mushroom immersion foray held annually at a different place each year in Alberta. He is also part of the Alberta Fungal Database committee\, which is involved in databasing archived and new lists of fungi identified at Alberta forays and in herbaria.  In 2013 Martin spearheaded the move to include DNA sequencing as part of the regular identification protocols at the Great Alberta Mushroom Foray.  \nIn the late 1980s Martin worked with Dr. Steve Davies\, from Alberta Agriculture in developing a small-scale do-it-yourself\, mushroom growing operation\, growing a variety of oyster mushrooms as well as Shiitake mushrooms. \nHe has always had an enthusiasm for educating others about mushrooms. As well as creating and presenting many of the programs for the Alberta Mycological Society\, the North American Mycological Society\, U of A Botanic Garden and other Natural History groups. \nMartin is currently working with “My Fungi”\, a mushroom company developing expertise in psilocybin production for research\, mushroom grow kits and mycoremediation. \nMartin may be contacted at:  Martin@MartinOnMushrooms.com \nAMS ZOOM (c/o Nature Alberta)
