DESCRIPTION:We kick off 2021 GAMF with a One-Day Mushroom Microscopy Course! \n\nMastering the Mysteries of Mushroom Microscopy \nTake your mushrooming skills to the next level! Under the microscope\, the fungal world mushrooms into a whole new world of spectacular spores\, crazy cystidia\, amazing asci\, and more! Many mushrooms cannot be identified with certainty without microscopic examination\, but learning these skills takes time\, practice\, and some help getting started. Join microscope guru\, Mike Schulz\, to learn and practice deciphering the key microscopic features of gilled mushrooms\, boletes\, polypores\, and ascomycetes. No microscope experience required.\nNote: you can bring your own microscope\, or one will be provided (please let us know if you are bringing your own). Be prepared by bringing your own fungal identification book\, writing materials or computer/personal devices. Some mushrooms will be provided\, but students are encouraged to bring some of their own as well. Listen and discuss all things fungi with mycologists\, such as Roland Treu\, Athabasca University Professor and researcher of fungi diversity and their ecology; Michael Beug\, former President of the Pacific Northwest Key Council and writer of macroscopic keys for fungi identification; and Michael Schulz\, mycologist\, ecologist and resident microscopist from Portage College! DESCRIPTION:Virtual Annual General Meeting via ZOOM\nDear Members of the Alberta Mycological Society\,\nThe AMS welcomes its members to attend the virtual 2022 Annual General Meeting (AGM). This year\, we’re excited and honoured to have Alan Rockefeller as our guest speaker. He’ll be presenting: \nBeing an Amateur Mycologist \nUsing the tools and resources available to develop your skills as an amateur mycologist and how this can contribute to the advancement of mycology. \nAlan Rockefeller is a citizen mycologist based in Oakland\, California. Rockefeller started studying mushrooms in 2001 and has since traveled around the world to find and classify them. He studies and teaches microscopy and fungal analysis techniques at Counter Culture Labs\, an open-science\, community laboratory in Oakland. He analyzes his regional mushroom collections at the lab using DNA extraction and polymerase chain reaction. \nRockefeller discovered and named Psilocybe allenii\, a psychoactive mushroom (magic mushroom) from the West Coast of the United States. He co-authored a 2020 publication characterizing five Psilocybe species. Mycological and psychedelic organizations around the country have invited Rockefeller to present his research. He is esteemed in online communities including the Shroomery\, Mushroom Observer\, and iNaturalist\, where he helps to identify fungi. DESCRIPTION:Presenter:  Martin Osis\nDate: Thursday\, May 5\, 2022\nTime: 19:00 – 20:30 hr. \nLocation: ZOOM link will be sent to all paid AMS members a few days before the event. \nMartin Osis Bio  April\, 2022 \nMartin Osis is an amateur mycologist who is one of the founding members of the Alberta Mycological Society in 1987 when it was then known as the Edmonton Mushroom Club. Since that time\, he has been a major contributor to the Society\, holding various positions throughout the years\, including President\, Vice President\, Program Director\, Foray Coordinator\, Database committee chair\, etc.  He has been a member of the Pacific Northwest Key Council and the Canadian trustee and Vice President of the North American Mycological Association. Because of his strong interest in medicinal mushrooms and the centuries’ long use of mushrooms in treatment of various conditions\, Martin studied Traditional Chinese Medicine at Grant MacEwan University. He also spearheaded the formation of NAMA’s Medicinal Mushroom Committee. \nMartin is generally regarded as one of Alberta’s experts in mushroom field identification.  He is responsible for several initiatives including AMS Annual Photo Contest (for members and non-members)\, utilizing the photos received for other projects\, such as AMS’ Alberta Mushroom Poster series including collaboration with Robert Rogers and Alberta Poison Control Centre to produce the “Poisonous Mushrooms of Alberta” poster for emergency and health clinic education and use\, and spearheaded a major photo display for the Royal Alberta Museum. He initiated the Great Alberta Mushroom Foray – AMS’ major mushroom immersion foray held annually at a different place each year in Alberta. He is also part of the Alberta Fungal Database committee\, which is involved in databasing archived and new lists of fungi identified at Alberta forays and in herbaria.  In 2013 Martin spearheaded the move to include DNA sequencing as part of the regular identification protocols at the Great Alberta Mushroom Foray.  \nIn the late 1980s Martin worked with Dr. Steve Davies\, from Alberta Agriculture in developing a small-scale do-it-yourself\, mushroom growing operation\, growing a variety of oyster mushrooms as well as Shiitake mushrooms. \nHe has always had an enthusiasm for educating others about mushrooms. As well as creating and presenting many of the programs for the Alberta Mycological Society\, the North American Mycological Society\, U of A Botanic Garden and other Natural History groups. \nMartin is currently working with “My Fungi”\, a mushroom company developing expertise in psilocybin production for research\, mushroom grow kits and mycoremediation. \nMartin may be contacted at:  Martin@MartinOnMushrooms.com \nAMS ZOOM (c/o Nature Alberta)

Mike is an experienced mycologist with an MSc in fungal ecology and 20 years of experience teaching mushroom identification. Come for one course or both!\n\nOn Saturday June 4 will be Spring Mushrooms\, a course that combines classroom and field components to help you learn and practice proper mushroom identification\, with an emphasis on spring species. It is being offered through Portage College’s Continuing Education program\, at a cost of only $75.
