SUMMARY:Live Virtual Presentation by Stephen Russell
DESCRIPTION:A Virtual Presentation with Stephen Russell\nThe Next Generation of DNA Research\nJoin us with Stephen Russell\, a mycologist from Indiana working on a biodiversity survey of all of the macrofungi (mushrooms) that occur in the state. He founded The Hoosier Mushroom Society in 2009 and is currently the President of the organization. His initial interest in mushrooms began with cultivation\, which led to writing a book titled The Essential Guide to Cultivating Mushrooms (Storey Publishing\, 2014). Stephen’s current project is a citizen science and DNA based exploration of local fungal biodiversity\, which has now generated thousands of new DNA-sequenced collections of fungal fruitbodies from across the state – amassing records for over 2\,000 unique species. \nPlease RSVP by November 9th\, 2022\, to attend. We will email you the ZOOM link as the event dates draws closer.

SUMMARY:2023 AGM\, Lunch & Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Loading the next set of gallery items...We can accommodate vegetarian\, vegan\, gluten\, dairy\, and other restrictions. Please specify them when purchasing your ticket.  \nOur Annual General Meeting (AGM) is back in person! This AGM gives our members a great opportunity to: \n\nMeet the AMS Board of Directors\, mycologists\, amateur mycologists\, biologists\, and other fungi enthusiasts.\nAttend a keynote presentation from Andy MacKinnon\, \, co-author of Mushrooms of British Columbia.\nHear about our great projects\, like our Fungarium and Fungal Database.\nCelebrate that mushrooms have finally made it to Canada’s Wild Species List! What’s next?\nListen to the highlights of our 2022 achievements.\nGet an early bird preview into our foray plans\, including the Great Alberta Mycological Foray.\nLearn about our society’s governance.\nProvide your own suggestions and ideas for the 2023 year.\nPurchase merchandise\, fungi books\, and vintage books that we’re purging from our storage.\n\nIf you’re interested in serving as a Director on the AMS board\, please contact Karen Slevinsky by email at kjslevinsky@hotmail.com. In the weeks prior to the AGM\, a nomination subcommittee will review all those interested in serving. \nSCHEDULE: \n8:45 AM – Doors open for a Meet and Greet with coffee\, tea\, juice\, and light pastries. \n9:30 AM – AGM begins. \n11:45 AM – AGM breaks for a soup & salad lunch. \n12: 30 PM – A Natural and Cultural History of Magic Mushrooms in British Columbia \nMagic mushrooms have been employed in spiritual practices in Mexico and Central America for millennia. The visionary powers of these mushrooms first became known to the world in 1957 and in the early 1960s\, they sparked a social and cultural “psychedelic revolution” soon dominated by lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). The discovery that magic mushrooms grew commonly and abundantly in the Pacific Northwest and in British Columbia (BC) helped make Canada’s westernmost province a focal point of social change. Recent advances show promise for carefully monitored treatment of some psychological disorders\, see for example Canadian Nurse July 2020 Magic mushrooms and the future of mental health care. \n\nThis presentation will explore the natural history of BC’s magic mushrooms and their role in the rapidly changing counter culture of the 1960s\, 1970s\, 1980s\, and up to the present day. \n\n3:00 PM – AGM wraps up. \nOur AMS website is undergoing some maintenance\, and you may experience some lag or long wait times when registering.  \nIMPORTANT: After you submit your PayPal payment\, please wait for a Confirmation page to appear after the PayPal window closes. This will ensure your order is complete and that you receive a confirmation email and your ticket.\n2023 AGM Agenda2022 AGM Minutes

SUMMARY:2023 AGM President's Dinner
DESCRIPTION:We can accommodate vegetarian\, vegan\, gluten\, dairy\, and other restrictions. Please specify them when purchasing your ticket.  \nPresident’s Award\nJanet Melnychuk \nOur President’s Dinner is a wonderful\, educational evening social where you can meet and chat with mycologists\, amateur mycologists\, and other nature enthusiasts. During this event\, our President recognizes an AMS member\, excluding AMS board members\, for making outstanding contributions to the AMS\, progressing the goals of the AMS\, or simply being a source of support and information for our growing membership. \nYou’ll have another opportunity to purchase merchandise\, fungi books\, and remaining vintage fungi books from our storage if you missed the AGM. \nDuring this evening\, Andy MacKinnon\, co-author of Mushrooms of British Columbia\, will present: \nFabulous Plants and Their Fungal Friends\nPlants are fascinating. Fungi are fascinating. But for sheer entertainment value\, it’s difficult to beat plants\, plus fungi. Fungi have been associated with plants since plants first colonized the land\, and are requisite partners of almost all of our familiar Alberta plants. \nThe President’s Dinner is brought to you by Chef Patrick Chaudet from Edmonton’s Italian Santa Maria Goretti Centre. We are serving a four course dinner to our attendees this year\, featuring much sought after wild edible mushrooms. \nDinner Menu\n6:00 PM – Doors open. \n6:30 PM – Dinner is served. \nAppetizer – Black Chanterelle\, spinach and ricotta cheese deep-fried ravioli\nSalad – Roasted wild mushroom salad\, crispy cheese tulip on base frisée\nEntrée – Alberta pork medallions\, morel sauce\, Swiss rösti potato\, asparagus\, grape tomato\nDessert – Candy cap mushroom panna cotta\, Coffee and Tea\nPresident’s Award\nThe President’s Award was originally proposed by then President Peter Arabchuk when he presented awards to Bill Richards and Martin Osis for contributions to the Alberta Mycological Society\, likely sometime about 2006 or so.  Since then both Martin and Bill have also been awarded with Honorary Life Memberships. \nIn 2008 the Board redefined the President’s Award and proposed two criteria: \n\nThe award should go to a non-Board member for extraordinary contributions and effort on behalf of the Society\, and\nIt was purely the President’s prerogative to make the choice.\n\nThis year the AMS President’s Award goes to Janet Melnychuk.  Janet doesn’t really have an interest in mycology; but she is a highly capable bookkeeper.  I met Janet with Rosemarie in April 2018.  Rosemarie had stepped down as President but she was determined to get the AMS assistance with tracking our finances.  The AMS had no Treasurer and had no bookkeeper.  (and no President\, but that’s a different story.) At that personal meeting Janet volunteered to sort out our finances\, enter invoices into QuickBooks\, balance the cheque book monthly\, and prepare year-end financial statements.  Whew!  And she has done so\, ever since 2018.  With no compensation and with little to no recognition.  To recognize her now for all her work (that most would find mindboggling)\, I will be delivering a coffee table book:  Truffles:  Earth’s Black Diamonds\, and an honorarium to her in the near future. \nCongratulations Janet and thank you for your contributions to the AMS.  It is fitting that you are not present.  But you are here: if you check item 10 on our agenda today – you have kept us in the good books! \nOur AMS website is undergoing some maintenance\, and you may experience some lag or long wait times when registering.  \nIMPORTANT: After you submit your PayPal payment\, please wait for a Confirmation page to appear after the PayPal window closes. This will ensure your order is complete and that you receive a confirmation email and your ticket.\nDoors open at 6:00 PM and dinner is served at 6:30 PM.
